The Toyota Mirai might be seeing a big price increase which might be disheartening some while others will see the benefit in this.
The new cost of around $72,195 will be based on the addition of a newly added Driver-Assist system being installed. These modern vehicle assist programs are becoming more common. The new 2022 edition of the Mirai, then, will come with this new Toyota Teammate Driver-Assist program.
At the moment, reports suggest this will add something in the region of $5,170 to the total cost of the vehicle. That is a significant jump. It will also only be included as part of the Limited trim level of the Mirai. So, if you are keen on buying a Toyota Mirai with this new assist system, you might need to make a decision on your purchase to get this new technology or not.
This new partially hands-free driving system is becoming popular with Toyota veterans. The aim is to try and reduce driving fatigue, and to help make sure that drivers can be more focused on potential hazards. It also means that they can enjoy benefits for long journeys on highways, handling things like controlling of brakes, acceleration, and driving centrally within the lines while on a highway.
However, this does not mean that Mirai drivers could go to sleep or play a game on their phone as they drive. This tech will still require the driver to keep a close eye on the road and to be ready to intervene should they be required.
Driver assistance or autonomous driving?
The main thing to note about this new system is that it will be regarded as a Level 2 SAE autonomy vehicle. This means that it is more of a driving assistant as opposed to a takeover autonomous driving system. This is important to note, though, as previous reports had suggested it might be closer to autonomous driving over driving assistance.
This new driver assist tech will give Toyota a leg up on other assisted driving vehicle systems. The likes of Super Cruise by General Motors and Blue Cruise for Ford are growing in popularity. Now, Toyota can boast a feature of their own which is sure to gather lots of interest from Toyota loyalists.
