As one of the biggest names in the driving world, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is a highly respected brand with good reason. They have been around the industry for a long time, having become a key name within various alternative driving methods. However, the announcement that the company is working on the development of a hydrogen-powered vehicle should excite many driving enthusiasts. Given that it will be based on the Land Rover Defender, too, there is natural excitement about what happens next.

JLR has been attempting to move towards a long-term ambition of having zero tailpipe emissions by the year 2036. The move to hydrogen power would be one way to help make this a reality in the future. The company, as part of the wider Tata Motors group, definitely has the capacity to really make this development stick.

While consumer confidence in a transformation of the auto industry remains low, big names like JLR getting involved can only help to move things further forward. These vehicles will be fuel cell electric vehicles which will, in the eyes of Jaguar, be “complimentary to battery-powered devices” and will be another key part of the move towards zero emission vehicles.

Tests set to start in 2021

Even more excitingly, though, is the fact that testing is set to start as early as late 2021. This will give fans of the JLR concept an idea of how things are going to improve and progress in the near future. With the ability to provide high-density energy and easy refueling, these devices will also be capable of delivering elite performance even in the face of extremely cold or hot environments.

This also comes as many major nations, such as the United Kingdom, look to bring an end to diesel vehicles by 2030. From 2035, all vehicles and vans will be expected to carry zero tailpipe emissions. As such, companies like JLR are intent on making sure they are ahead of the game come this deadline. Indeed, the company intends that Jaguar will go all-electric as early as 2025, while Land Rover will look to bring out as many as six pure electrical editions by the year 2026.

So, this is an exciting time for the industry. As we look to try and find solutions to the problem of high-emissions vehicles, these little tests and changes could be the secret that is needed to create a more harmonious future in terms of energy consumption and emissions.

While it might be a while until we see a vehicle of this style on the roads for average drivers, things are accelerating as many would have hoped.
