Without doubt, the last three years have been an immense challenge for just about every industry. The fact that many of us have been stuck at home, only able to head out for short bursts into public, has been a huge frustration. Many industries which are used to thriving are now noticing a stellar slowdown in terms of performance. While the world begins to rebound from the COVID pandemic, some industries have noticed an impressive uptake in sales that might not have existed in the past.
One industry that is seeing this boon is for hydrogen car sales. Though hydrogen powered commercial vehicles have been increasing in popularity for some time, 2021 saw a large increase in hydrogen powered passenger car sales. Indeed, trends in the market show that 2021 was a record year so far for hydrogen passenger vehicle sales. This is a very important milestone for the industry, as the sale and promotion of hydrogen cars has been a talking point for many years.
Worldwide sales were over 16,000 fuel cell vehicles and in the U. S. the number was over 12,000 FCV’s sold. This was an increase of 37-percent year over year.
This latest process, then, could see hydrogen cars continue to improve their image and visibility within a very crowded and competitive field.
Though many green solutions for cars are appearing on the market, hydrogen is promoted as one of the best all-around options. It has taken some time, though, for both the impact of hydrogen and its realistic ability to be used for passenger vehicles in the mainstream to be made clear to the public.
As people come out of the pandemic and look for new ways to get around, though, hydrogen cars look to have built up a stellar amount of interest in a short period of time.
Indeed, a study by Information Trends found that some 44,000 hydrogen vehicles have been sold since sales began.
What are the most popular hydrogen car brands?
At the moment, the market is heavily dominated by two major names – the Hyundai Nexo SUV, and the Toyota Mirai. The former is an impressive SUV style vehicle that meets the size and the bulk that many people, especially families, need. The latter, the Mirai, is a classy sedan car that has managed to establish itself as the go-to for everyone from environmentally conscious professionals to green-minded entrepreneurs.
These two brands are without doubt the biggest names in the market. However, other brands are beginning to emerge who could also have critical say in the industry in the years to come. Brands such as H2X, an Australian brand, is also beginning to make a big name for itself in the marketplace.
China, which is showcasing hydrogen vehicles at the 2022 Winter Olympics, has also brought a range of vehicles such as Great Wall Motor and GAC Motor. This extra competition will offer consumers more variety, and the extra competitive spark should both push innovation and force companies to keep improving for their own well-being.
So, for the first time yet, we are seeing a genuine push to sell hydrogen vehicles around the world in a way that could truly spark the entire industry into life.
