Do you come from a land down under? Where women glow and men plunder? If so, then you’re in for a treat as the first mass produced hydrogen car, a Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell was unveiled in Australia this week.
In addition, Australia opened its first and only hydrogen fueling station at the Macquarie Park headquarters in Sydney.
According to Hyundai, “The Federal Industry and Science Minister, The Hon. Ian Macfarlane MP, today unveiled Australia’s first hydrogen powered car, the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell.
“The Minister also officially opened Australia’s only hydrogen vehicle refueling station and welcomed the commitment Hyundai Motor Company Australia is making to bring such leading edge green technology to Australian motorists.”
The ix35 Fuel Cell was originally built in Ulsan, South Korea and then shipped to Australia. Sending a hydrogen car to the Land Down Under is basically a nudge from Hyundai toward the Australian government that would ultimately be responsible for building the needed hydrogen fueling stations throughout the continent.
A good first step in this endeavor would be building a hydrogen highway system between the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Perhaps another highway between Sydney and Brisbane could be next. And if the Aussies were to fully commit to this technology, then I would eventually like to see a coast to coast hydrogen highway system spanning between Sydney and Perth. Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?
