Let’s take a quick look at the specifications of the new Aston Martin Rapide S Hydrogen Hybrid race car. The Rapid S is a bi-fuel vehicle that runs on either compressed hydrogen gas or with the flip of a switch, gasoline (or some sources say a combination of both).

This model features a twin-turbocharged 6.0 liter, V12 engine with 5,935 cc and 470 bhp. In terms of power, Rapide S Hydrogen boasts 470 bhp, 350 kW, and 477 PS. There’s a Touchtronic automatic transmission, with six-speed power,
This model also features rear-wheel drive, and can go 0-60 mph in just over 4.7 seconds, and tops out at around 190 mph. The Rapide S Hydrogen includes a tilt-telescoping steering wheel, a fine leather interior, and a 16 speaker sound system.
While the specifications of this model are certainly impressive, and in keeping with the normal level of quality one would expect from Aston Martin, neither specifications nor the norm are what defines Bond, so what defines this model besides the raw numbers?
In May 2013, the Rapide S Hydrogen was the first of its kind to run in the 41st ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez complete 40 km of the race. The Rapide also made a brief showing in Le Mans the same year. Four carbon fiber tanks hold around 7.7 pounds of hydrogen compressed at 5,000 psi.
According to the Aston Martin press release, “The Hybrid Hydrogen system comprises a hydrogen fuel rail, storage tanks and proprietary engine management system. This enables flexibility in the control of the combustion process according to each particular driving situation: either pure hydrogen, gasoline or a arbitrary blend of both can be selected to ensure optimum power, acceleration and CO2 reduction. This control results in a powerful and dynamic propulsion system that provides sports car performance but with a carbon footprint more akin to that of a supermini.”
Aston Martin has partnered with Alset Global in regard to the hydrogen system for the vehicle.
